So, what do we DO with the money we raise?

Sometimes it seems like are constantly talking, writing, and tweeting about the next fundraising event we have coming up - as are most non-profit agencies we know. We always have tremendous support, and volunteers and donors are always happy to help, but now and then someone asks the very reasonable question, "Why?"

Why, with all of the great non-profits out there, should people support Hope Cancer Resources?

We are very fortunate to live in a community that has a large number of nonprofit agencies providing services to those in need. No matter what your color, gender, religious inclination, or what financial situation you are in, if you are in need in Northwest Arkansas, there is probably an agency that can help you.

In fact, there are several agencies in the area whose missions include the support of cancer patients. What sets Hope Cancer Resources apart from those other non-profits is the breadth of the services we provide and the commitment we make to keep all of the money we raise right here in Northwest Arkansas.

We work with patients who are either living or receiving their cancer treatment in Benton, Carroll, Madison or Washington counties, and provide an array of services including education programs, cancer screenings, financial assistance, tobacco cessation counseling, emotional support, Spanish interpretation, transportation, and access to locally managed clinical trials. In addition, we have relationships with other agencies, and are happy to provide references if there is something offered elsewhere that we do not provide.

In addition to our core social work staff, who provide emotional support and assistance to cancer patients and their families as they make their journey, the financial assistance we provide to patients and their families help pay for prescriptions, nutritional supplements, dental care, housing needs, gasoline cards and temporary housing for those traveling into or out of our area for treatments. Here are some numbers collected over the past year that demonstrate what we are doing with the money we raise:

$1,907
The average prescription assistance provided per month for local cancer patients.

$17,080
The value of medications provided per month through pharmaceutical Patient Assistance Programs
(PAPs) and other programs that require application assistance from our staff.

$9,146
The average per month provided to patients for housing and transportation needs.

87
The number of patients provided transportation on a daily, weekly or monthly basis for their cancer treatment and appointments related to their treatment...

1,590
The number of trips made to transport those 87 patients...

97,500
The number of miles logged making those 1,590 trips.

329
The number of people who participated in a skin cancer or prostate cancer screening clinic provided free to the community.
213
The number of patients provided with smoking cessation education.

If you are interested in volunteering your time or donating to support Hope Cancer Resources, you can find more information on our website. Remember, the story of cancer is not about "them", it's about all of us.
